Having a Purpose Can Positively Influence Your Mind, Body, and Overall Well-being

How often do you think about your daily energy expenditure?

If you're like most people, the answer is probably not very often. However, understanding the concept of MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) can provide a powerful perspective on your health.
Let's break it down:
As we reach the latter part of our lives and retire from formal work, many of us start to lose our sense of purpose. Life becomes meaningless without specific interests, goals, and desires, leading to gloominess. This process of decline can negatively affect our health and longevity.

A life without purpose implies that a person has already completed their journey and has nowhere to go. This situation fosters a different mindset, changing the person's psychological and social behavior. Their indifference and hopeless attitude send negative signals to their biology, which manifests as that person's failure to cope with life challenges.
Research has shown that PIL is associated with positive health effects in older adults. These positive effects include fewer chronic conditions, less disability, and reduced mortality.
PIL also has a protective effect on cardiovascular diseases. Similarly, those with a greater purpose in life had decreased risk of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive impairment.
Although the exact mechanisms of how PIL benefits the mind, body, and overall health are not fully understood, research suggests some plausible pathways. By having a sense of purpose, we are more likely to engage in meaningful activities. We adopt behaviors that promote good health, and when faced with stress, we have better coping skills.
In summary, having a Purpose in Life is essential for our overall well-being and happiness. Especially as we age, PIL becomes even more crucial. It helps us maintain physical and mental health, ultimately leading to a longer, more fulfilling life.
